Karma... « Thread Started on Jan 12, 2006, 4:02pm »
So, I noticed my "Karma" rating went from one "positive," to three "negative" in half a day....
Now, of course I don't know this for sure, but I suspect this change-over was the result of a single poster's efforts, rather than various people speaking their minds.
So, fair or unfair, I experimented with "smiting" someone, just to see what happens (since I couldn't find anything about this feature in the obvious information sources).
Then I tried to "smite" them again, to see what controls exist for the function.
What I found was this: If you wait an hour, you can apparently modify a person's "Karma" again. And again. And again. (To be fair, I will use this after-an-hour ability to restore the "exalt" I took away when I "smote" a poster for the sake of the experiment. I'd've done it to myself, but that's not an available choice).
Personally, I find the ability to "exalt" or "smite" to be an interesting feature, but not necessarily a good one...at least, as it stands.
Where I have a problem is with the ability to smite and smite and smite, simply because you have an ax to grind. The "karma" rating is an interesting way to see how a poster is viewed by other posters. But such an interesting tool is pretty meaningless ... if one person can bury another in "smites." (I'm not too sure anyone would CARE if someone buried someone else in "exalts!" )
Is there a way to turn the "exalt/smite" feature into more of a one-person-one-vote mechanism by using a daily or weekly or monthly restriction, instead of hourly? That way, if a person got a hare-up-their-butt, they would have to be pretty determined to swing a "karma" rating in any appreciable way.
(((Frankly, I don't really much care. I EXPECT to see negative numbers on my "karma" because of the way I choose to post. I intentionally use a fairly "forward" style and rarely post "for" things: I prefer to spend my time trying to correct errors - to put facts back into a discussion, rather than the inaccuracies or falsehoods I frequently find there - which means I am usually posting against what someone has said, rather than for it. This means I will undoubtedly get lots of LOW "karma" numbers, to which I say, "So be it." But that doesn't mean I am in favor of ONE PERSON creating an impression of me, when that may not be the overall impression...which is what the "karma" rating ideally SHOULD show, isn't it?)))

I don't know too much about you, Paid, but it would seem you have a Humanist philosophy (as evidenced in the Mexico thread). It's ironic for me, as an Anti-Humanist, Privatist, and Corporatist, that you would be the first to get a negative rating, and I would be the first to get +3
At any rate, I think we should be aware of who is exalting and smiting us. For the record, I've yet to use this feature myself. Although Sen has tempted me to vote for her on occasion. But I nearly smote her for dissin' Senator Graham ... the only man who made the Alito hearings entertaining to watch

Gee, when I popped in ths morining, I was up to -4.
LOLOL
Clearly, someone thinks this is going to hurt my feelings. Otherwise, why bother?
I wonder if they realize that once the number gets up to a certain level - -10 or -15, maybe - anyone who sees it ... will think it's a joke, a ruse, rather than take it seriously.
Naw, probably not.
(Maybe I should log in as a "sock" and give myself 50 or 60 negative Karma points, eh? )

While this in one sense would be nice, it would turn the board from discussing politics into shall we say, a political smear campaign.

Wow. I am honored by your first statement and laugh at the second. I believe I said I couldn't stop laughing myself-it did indeed make it amusing. And what tied with him was the argument between Kennedy and Specter over what Specter received in the mail.
